Illinois Coronal Scaling Certification Course for Dental Assistants

The Illinois Coronal Scaling Certification course is a state-approved, 3-day training program that authorizes qualified dental assistants in Illinois to perform supragingival coronal scaling on eligible pediatric patients. It covers coronal scaling theory, hand instrument techniques, periodontal anatomy, infection control, ethics, and jurisprudence, with competency assessment and 6 full-mouth scaling procedures completed under direct supervision.

The course runs over 3 days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at our Chicago, Illinois training facility at 8755 West Higgins Rd. It includes a minimum of 32 hours of online didactic study and in-person hands-on clinical instruction.

No, the Coronal Scaling Certification course is currently only available for dental assistants in Illinois. It is approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) and is specific to the Illinois Dental Practice Act. After completing the certification, dental assistants in Illinois may only perform supragingival coronal scaling on children younger than 17 who do not have periodontal disease, are not in ill health or have special needs, and are eligible for Medicaid, are uninsured, or whose household income is not greater than 300% of the federal poverty level. Only hand instruments may be used.
