Florida CE Requirements

Dentist
- Dentists are typically required to complete 28 continuing education CE hours for license renewal.
- 1. Mandatory Subjects:
- 1. Medical Error: 2 hours
- 2. Domestic Violence: 2 hours, due every third biennium.
- 3. HIV/AIDS: 2 hours, due for the first renewal only.
- 4. CPR Certification: Current CPR Certification is required, and it must be obtained through a live course.
- 5. Safe and Effective Prescribing of Controlled Substances: 2 hours, effective July 1, 2019, required for all dentists at every renewal. This course may be included to meet the total of 30 general hours required.
- 6. First Biennium Renewal: If you are newly licensed and renewing your license for the first time, you are only required to complete 2 hours of Prescribing Controlled Substances and 2 hours of HIV/AIDS.
- 2. Other Methods of Obtaining Continuing Education per Biennium:
- A. 6 hours for participating in dental hygiene exercises.
- B. 8 hours for participating in dental clinical exercises.
- C. 11 hours for participating in both exercises listed above.
- D. 6 hours for participating in pro bono dental and dental hygiene services to the indigent residing in Florida (Credit calculated at a ratio of 1 CE credit for each 1 hour of patient services).
- E. 11 hours total for participating as an expert witness in disciplinary review cases.
- F. 3 hours per semester/quarter if participating as part of a course at an accredited school as adjunct or part-time faculty
- G. Up to 4 hours for attending a meeting of the Board of Dentistry wherein disciplinary cases are considered.
- H. 2 hours as an anesthesia inspection consultant.
- During the licensure biennial renewal period that begins on March 1, 2020 and every licensure biennial renewal period thereafter, all dentists who hold an active sedation permit of any level shall take the following continuing education instead of the continuing education required in subsection (1): A four (4) hour board approved continuing education course in Medical Emergencies that shall include airway management as a component of the course.
Dental Hygienist
- Dentists are typically required to complete 28 continuing education CE hours for license renewal
- 1. Mandatory Subjects:
- 1) Medical Error- 2 hours.
- 2) Domestic Violence- 2 hours. Due every third biennium.
- 3) Must have a current CPR Certification, and it must be a live course.
- 4) First Biennium Renewal: If you are newly licensed and renewing your license for the first time, you are only required to complete 2 hours of Prescribing Controlled Substances and 2 hours of HIV/AIDS.
- 2. Board Rule Approved Providers:
- A. American or National Dental Associations.
- B. Florida Dental Association or its components.
- C. American or National Dental Hygienist Associations.
- D. Florida Dental Hygiene Association or its components.
- E. Academy of General Dentistry.
- F. A dental, dental hygiene, or dental assisting school accredited by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation.
- G. A hospital, college, university, or community college, accredited by an accrediting agency approved by the United States Department of Education.
- H. American Red Cross, American Heart Association, & American Cancer Society.
- I. American Medical Association’s Liaison Committee for Medical Education.
- J. Providers and courses approved by the Board of Dentistry listed in CE Broker.
- 3. Other Methods of Obtaining Continuing Education per Biennium:
- A. 6 hours (per biennium) for participating in dental hygiene exercise.

- D. Up to 4 hours (per renewal cycle) for attending a meeting of the Board of Dentistry wherein disciplinary cases are considered.
