Illinois Pit and Fissure Sealant Course

To perform place pit and fissure sealants a dental assistant must:
1. Be at least 18 years of age
AND
2a. Complete 1,000 hours of clinical dental assisting experience
OR
2b. Complete a CODA-accredited dental assisting program
OR
2c. Hold a current national DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification,
AND
3. (a) Complete an Illinois Board-approved course relative to the expanded function in question, subject to specific didactic and clinical requirements
OR
3. (b) Provide proof of completion of an Illinois Board-approved dental assisting program that contained the expanded function in the curriculum.
Online didactic instruction covering the following subject areas: Sealant techniques, products and placement, along with anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and dental emergencies.
Participants, under the observance of their supervising dentist, will be required to place at least six pit and fissure sealants after completion of the course.
*This course is consistent with the guidelines of the Illinois Dental Practice Act. All educational and clinical requirements are in accordance with the State of Illinois.
Each participant must agree to act as a patient for coronal polishing. In addition, each participant must follow the OSHA guidelines for infection control and use of clinical Personal Protective Equipment (i.e., gloves, mask, eyewear and clinic gown).
